|
Why is my network installation not
working?
The installation of the network
edition of Carpet Systems should ideally
be carried out by a competent computer
user. It is imperative that the
instructions provided are followed to
the letter. These instruction are
provided in MS-WORD document format and
are to be found in the 'C;/Program
Files/Carpet Systems Client' folder.
 |
|
|
|
How many client computers can I install
the program too?
Provided you have purchased the
necessary licences, there is no limit to
the number of client computers in the
network that the program can be
installed on. However the speed of your
network will determine how many users
can access the data at any one time
without the program becoming unbearably
slow. We suggest you consult a qualified
network engineer if your system is
running to slow. |
|
|
|
Why does the client computers require a
separate installation routine?
The main program installation
includes installation of the data files
and these can only be held on one
computer (known as the server). All
other installations of the client
program will access the data held on the
server including all report files.
 |
|
|
|
My
backup file is getting extremely large,
why is this? The backup file
compresses your data and report files
and should not ordinarily be over large
(a typical single user retail shop
should still be able to backup on to no
more than 2 floppy disks after about 12
months use). If you find the size of
your backup file getting to large, check
that you do not have any files in the
'Data' and 'Reports' sub-folders of your
Carpet Systems folder, that shouldn't be
there. Particularly check the size of
any suspect file and temporarily move
it, and start up the program to see if
the program requires the file or not. If
you are unsure which files should and
shouldn't be in these folders, email
technical support first. |
|
|
|
Is
the backup routine reliable or should I
backup in another way?
Although the inbuilt backup routine is
very reliable, we do recommend that you
take regular backup's using a different
method. With the cost of CD-R's as low
as they are, a weekly or monthly backup
of all your valuable data is highly
recommended. You must also remember to
store a recent backup off-site in case
of fire, flood, burglary, etc. We also
offer an email backup service, whereby
you can email your most recent backup
file to us and we will store this for
you on our server. This is an annual
service with a small charge of £25.00
for up to 26 backup's. |
|
|
|
I
get an error message 'text exceeds
memory' when I try to back up, what is
wrong? The log file in the
root directory of your C:/ drive has
become too large. If you delete the file
'Carpet Systems Backup.log' from the
root directory the problem will be
solved. |
|
|
|
I
can't find the menu option allowing me
to upgrade my data from FOBS 2001 to
Carpet Systems. Click
on the 'File' menu option in Carpet
Systems to see if the 'Upgrade FOBS 2001
data' option is visible. If not this
means that your FOBS 2001 program has
not been installed into the default
folder 'C:\Program Files\FOBS 3'. Using
Windows Explorer, find your FOBS 2001
folder and copy it to the folder
named above. Restart Carpet Systems and
the upgrade option should now be
available. |
|
|
|
After
upgrading from FOBS 2001, I receive the
error message 'Exception
EReadError in module VCL40.BPL at
00028CED.......' , why is this?
When trying to run a newly installed
version of FOBS 2001 after upgrading
from FOBS 3.05 the installation routine
has failed to install the updated DLL
files required to run FOBS 2001.
Upgrading to the latest version will
cure this problem. If you do not wish to
upgrade, contact us and we will send you
a repair file. |
|
|
|
I
am running the network edition. If
I update the main program, do I need to
update the network program too?
Yes, you should. An update file will be
available from the downloads page, you
will need the same password to install
the update as you used to install the
network edition. |
|
|
|
Why
do my Invoices
print with decimal point and 2
further zero's (201.00)? To
remove the decimal point from the
invoice number, edit the invoice
report and click the 'Define Search'
tab. Then double click on the 'ORDERNO'
field on the bottom grid (invoice
number is same as Order number). The
field properties box will open. In
the 'Format' box enter a single zero
and this will eliminate the decimal
points. Other options are to enter
seven zeros '0000000' this would
then display invoice number '201' as
'0000201' thus keeping all your
invoice numbers uniform. Do not
forget to save your invoice when
finished and to apply this format to
any other invoice layouts that you
use. |
|
|
|
Why
does another
Company name appear when I print an
Invoice or an Estimate? On some
early versions, we had
included example reports using demo
companies. These where initially
included to show you how you could
layout your own Invoices, Estimates,
etc. These can easily be changed
using the Edit/Preview option in the
Report Writer, to reflect your own
company details. |
|
| |
|
How can I reset
my Report Path as I can no longer access
my Reports? If you can no
longer access your report folders then
the registry entry pointing to the
report files is probably corrupt. You
will need to access the registry to
alter the report setting but this is not
as daunting a task as some would have
you believe. Click on the Windows
'Start' button and then click on 'Run' .
Type 'Regedit' in the box and click
'OK'. When the Regedit program is
running, click on 'File, 'Export' and
save to a location on your hard disk.
This is a backup should you make a
mistake. The expand the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER branch, followed by
the 'Software' branch then locate
'Carpet Systems' then click on 'Program
Settings' In the right hand pane locate
and click on the ReportPath setting and
press the delete key. You will be asked
to confirm deletion, click Yes then
close the registry editor. When you
restart Carpet Systems the path to the
report files will return to the default
setting. |
|

|
Index
out of Date. Why am I receiving this
error message? If you encounter
this error message, close down FOBS
(including all Network
installations) and re-build the
Database Indexes using the 'Datafix'
utility supplied with FOBS. If you
receive this error on a regular
basis please read the Borland
Paradox information page found at http://community.borland.com/article/0,1410,15209,00.html
for full details on how this error
occurs and how to eliminate it from
happening again. |
|
|
|
What
do I do if I get a 'Key Violation' error
message? These are usually
caused by a data corruption problem.
Data can easily get corrupted if the
systems is shut down during a data
transfer, for instance a power failure
or power surge. To cure the problem,
close down the program, and run the 'Datafix'
program, checking and repairing all
tables and indexes as necessary. You can
then close the Datafix program and
re-start Carpet Systems. |
|

|
My
computer has crashed and I don't have a
recent backup, what should I do? We
advise all our users to take regular
back up's. If your computer has crashed
and you have not taken a backup, the
reality of what has happened should
ensure you learn from this mistake and
make a company back up procedure, as
soon as you get everything back to
normal. If you do not take regular back
up's, the program will start to do this
for you after seven days. It will take a
backup and keep it in a hidden location
on your hard drive. If you still have
your hard drive, even if the computer is
not working and providing it has not
been formatted, your data should be in
tact. If this is the case, contact us by
email and we will advise you how to
proceed. If your computer has been
stolen or is badly damaged in a fire,
there is not much that can be done. |

|
|
I
am getting an Error
with COMCTL32.DLL reported when
running program, why? Using an older
version of COMCTL32.DLL than is
installed with the program will cause
the program to fail to run.
Installing some programs (like
Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.02)
will cause COMCTL32.DLL to be
overwritten with an older version.
If this error occurs you will have
to re-install the program. |
|
|
|
Why
won't Windows NT
4.0 won't reboot after installing
the program? This is another error
caused by the file COMCTL32.DLL (see
above). The installation routine
marks this file for deletion and
updating, but some NT 4.0 systems do
not replace the file when rebooting
and cause the system to fail. Read
Microsoft Knowledge Base articles http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q186/1/76.asp
and http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q221/8/36.ASP
for further details. This error has
been fixed with all installation
routines created after 1/6/00.

|
|
|
The
program seems too cheap, is it any good?
Well what would you expect us
to say! The program has been developed
over a number of years, and as the
development costs of the software are
the highest, and these have now been
met, we can distribute the program at a
much smaller price, allowing it to be
used by both small and large retailers.
The network edition is a very reasonable
price for what you get, especially
compared to similar programs on the
market. |

The
Datafix Utility Program is supplied with
Carpet Systems. To cut down on download
time this program may not have been
installed on your computer. It should be
located in your Carpet System folder in
Program Files on your computers C:
drive. If it can not be found then you
should upgrade to the latest version
were it will be automatically installed. |

Running Carpet
Systems in Windows Vista
Although Carpet
Systems wasn't originally designed to
run under Windows Vista, we have tested
the program with Vista and although
there can still be a few issues it
actually performs well.
Running the Program
One of Vista's
features is increased security
protection. User Account Control
is now the default, this effectively
runs a user's account in a reduced
authorisation level, in contrast to full
Administrator rights which was the
default under XP.
Usually the
installation goes smoothly, but when you
attempt to run the program you get an
error:
"Network
initialisation failed. File or directory
does not exist. File C:\PDOXUSRS.NET.
Permission denied. Directory: C:\".
This is because the
program is attempting to write a small
temporary file to the root folder of
Drive C:, which is now disallowed under
Vista.
However, there's a new
Vista feature that allows you to provide
administrator access on a
program-by-program basis. This is on the
Properties dialogue for each
program, which can be found from various
places on your computer. One of these is
from the Start button: locate the
menu option for Carpet Systems, (or you
can use its Desktop icon, if you have
one). Right-click on this with your
mouse and from the pop-up menu, select
'Properties'. Go to the 'Compatibility'
tab (right), then in the ‘Privilege
Level’ section towards the bottom click
the checkbox labelled "Run this program
as an administrator". Click the OK
button. This will now always run Carpet
Systems in Administrator mode. As the
program starts you will see a pop-up box
entitled "User Account Control" - just
click "allow" for the program to load
successfully. Note that if the checkbox
in the Properties dialogue (left) was
greyed with a tick in it, you already
have administrator privileges throughout
the whole system.
There is another,
neater solution which avoids the pop-up
box at start-up. You should be able to
re-direct the temporary file to a
different location by using the utility
BDEADMIN.EXE, normally found in
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Borland
Shared\BDE (or perform a search for this
file as it's sometimes found in a
different location). Run BDEADMIN.EXE
and drill down to Configuration Drivers
> Native > Paradox. Then on the
right-hand pane you should see the NET
DIR setting. If you can change this to a
location with 'write' access, i.e.
almost anywhere but C:\, it should start
up O.K.
The Help Files
Windows help files in
the .HLP format as used in Carpet
Systems are no longer supported by Vista
straight out of the box, so you'll now
get a message to that effect when you
click on the program help. Microsoft
recognises the problem, and has provided
a viewer for these files.

relevant page on the Microsoft website.
